The Newtown Historical Society and the
Connecticut Historical Commission co-sponsored a survey that inventoried
371 buildings throughout Newtown.
The report, “A Historic and Architectural
Survey for the Town of Newtown, Connecticut”, states “A basic survey area
encompassing the Borough of Newtown was inventoried as an intensive level
survey for 188 eligible buildings and sites to 1945. An additional list of
183 buildings dating to pre-1826 compiled by the Newtown Historical
Society was inventoried for all of Newtown with the exception of the Sandy
Hook historic village area.“
This report, available for viewing in the
reference department of the C. H. Booth Library, describes the town’s
development from pre-European settlement through 1945. It has a list of the
surveyed sites and an inventory form for each site describing structures,
notable features, historical significance, and the sources for the
information.
By undertaking and supporting projects such as these, we not only
preserve Newtown's past but provide for its future in the form of lasting
documented resources. The Society recognizes this need as even more urgent
as we move into the 21st century.
