For over 100 years the one room school house
was the backbone of rural American
education. The society acquired the
Middle Gate one room school
in 1968 and relocated the structure from
its original location on Toll Gate Hill (now Route 25) to its present
location on the grounds of Middle Gate Elementary School. Accurately
preserved, the building is utilized for historical re-enactment by Newtown
pupils and is
open during various Society and public events.
In excess of $5,000 restoration of the building was
recently completed which included a new cedar roof, rafter repair and
window rebuilding. These repairs were solely funded by the Society.
