Newtown's own Newtown Savings Bank Vice President Karen Tracey before your eyes will become Amelia Earhart. This program/performance has been given a number of times always to great acclaim. Tracey details the background of Earhart, the scope of her achievements and the triumph and tragedy of her life.

OPEN HOUSE AND LIVING HISTORY DEMONSTRATION
The Society's museum will be open featuring a presentation from Jim Degen of Brookfield. Mr. Degen will be joining us along with his portable lathe to present a woodturning demonstration. Woodturning is a form of woodworking that is used to create wooden objects on a lathe. Woodturning differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Costumed docents will be available to answer questions and give guided tours of the house. Please watch The Newtown Bee for details.

Connecticut raconteur Robert Berthelson will trace the first 100 years of photography from its first timid appearances through Matthew Brady's great Civil War photographs to the advennt of color photography. This will be Berthelson's third appearance before the Historical Society and his lectures are always well received.

OPEN HOUSE AND LIVING HISTORY DEMONSTRATION
The Society's museum will be open featuring a presentation from Kate LaPlante of "Ancient Art of Spinning" in Seymour. Ms. LaPlante will demonstrate different fibers used, the techniques of wool preparation, and the concept of spinning yarn in ancient and colonial times. Visitors will have a visual and hands on experience. Costumed docents will also be available to answer questions and give guided tours of the house.

John Babina, with experience in building and hydrology, will give a guest lecture on the history of the Stevenson Dam. By dislocating the local population and rerouting water channels plus normal buildings problems, the building of our local dam turned out to be more of a problem than imagined. Fortunately, it all turned out well.

OPEN HOUSE AND LIVING HISTORY DEMONSTRATION
The Society's museum will be open featuring a presentation from Bob Aborn of Ellington. Mr. Aborn will be giving a demonstration on broom making. Combining his interest in farming, history and woodcraft, he researches and produces brooms and brushes that would have been used in pre-1800 settlements. Walking Tour of the Village Cemetery
Join Town Historian Dan Cruson on a tour through time. this walking tour will cover the southeast corner of the old burying ground in where many of Newtown's most prominent men have been interred. After a brief introduction to the way 18th century burying grounds were laid out and what many of the symbols on the headstones mean, he will introduce you to some of Newtown's most important history makers.

Tour participants should plan to gather at 12:00 noon by the main entrance of the cemetery at the intersection of Elm Drive, Many Hawley Lane, and Deep Brook Road. Wear comfortable shoes. The walk will last roughly an hour and will involve some modest slopes. At the conclusion of the tour, all participants are invited back to the Matthew Curtiss House for the concurrent open house and light refreshments.

15th Annual House and Garden Tour

ATTENTION:
Day-of event tickets will be sold on Saturday, July 17th starting at 10am at the Matthew Curtis House on 44 Main Street in Newtown, CT.
The tour this year features eight properties that reflect Newtown’s diverse history. Three wonderful homes from the 1700s will include our Matthew Curtiss House Museum with costumed docents, and the 1748 home of Matthew’s uncle Benjamin Curtiss, filled with period antiques and surrounded by stunning gardens, as well as a 1798 Federal farmhouse with outbuildings and wonderful grounds. Brent Colley will speak on The Influence of American Indian Pathways on CT Transportation Systems & Settlements. The talk focuses on the progression from Indian footpaths, to bridle paths, to cart ways, to colonial highways and turnpikes right up to their influence on modern roads, highways, canals, and railroads. NEWTOWN HISTORICAL SOCIETY SAILS WITH THE GREAT WHITE FLEET
The Great White Fleet was sent around the world by Teddy Roosevelt. This 14 month odyssey saw 16 coal burning battleships traverse a dozen oceans and seas, crisscross the equator several times, call on more than 30 ports and log over 46,000 miles. Teddy Roosevelt sent them on their way to announce that America had arrived as a global power. Sometimes our swabbies were welcomed as heros but other times their behavior could have been better.

The Society’s museum will be open featuring Open Hearth Cooking by Patty Graves and Bill Brett, both of Newtown. A warm fire and enticing aromas will welcome visitors as they walk through the door. Costumed docents will be available to answer questions and give guided tours of the house. This demonstration has been very successful throughout the years. A warm fire and home cooked aromas will welcome visitors. Come join us in the keeping room, the center of all activity of a colonial home, to watch the preparation and maybe even sample the finished delights.
